Recolouring and Special Effects

One of my favourite tasks to do in Photoshop is to recolour black and white photos. It doesn’t matter if they are old photos originally in grayscale or if they are modern photos which have been desaturated by the artist. Adding colour to a colourless photo is a great way to express creativity and to also get hands on training with colour theory.

I found this photo on a stock photo website and at first I had discounted it as I didn’t know what I might use it for. The pose of the model was great for a creative composite, but the water bubbles were too integrated to easily isolate. After having done a number of recolouring projects, I came across this photo again while looking for stock photos in my archives and I then knew what I had to do.
